Yes, it's in Florida. This was a museum house/park. There were smudge pots at the time the author lived here, but they were very expensive, so she used fires. There was a danger of frost that week, and the park people do things the way that she did.

Is that a common sight of logs or such ready for frost?

That little bit of fire here and there would keep the frost at bay? Or maybe they load it up as needed.
